A second attempt to cover Paul McCartney's song, "Friends To Go," which appears on his 2005 album, "Chaos and Creation in the Backyard," which turns 10 on September 12, 2015. My first attempt appears on my solo album "Let The River Flow," but as I was only 15 at the time of recording it and I had almost no mixing and mastering experience, it was rough; the harmonies were off, some of the chords were wrong, and the mix was, well, nonexistent!
Researching "Friends To Go" ten years ago proved to be a pivotal moment for me because I learned that Paul McCartney played every single instrument himself; the process of layering track after track by yourself (guitars, piano, drums, keyboards, percussion) and have it sound like a full band was extremely inspiring as an aspiring multi-instrumentalist because it meant I was able to build something without the help of others, and have complete control over the entire process. While on this most recent version I am not entirely alone (friend and colleague Jeremy Milliner plays the four-note flugelhorn solo in the middle and Lianna Gekker plays the shaker), I essentially take on the role of a one-man-band, much like Paul did, and much like I have done over the past four albums of my solo career thus far.
To boil down all that I just said into a sentence or two, I am paying tribute to the man and the album that started it all for me. Thank you, Sir Paul.
